#2: Getting to Know the Gardener
How I Got Here:
I would be remiss if I didn't begin my writing coach profile with my experience as a writing coach. I was a film major when I transferred to UW-Milwaukee, but it never felt like a perfect fit. It was during that time that I was introduced to an opportunity to work at an MPS high school as an M3 Writing Coach. Although I had never worked in education, I dove headfirst into the unknown and quickly realized how fulfilling and exciting teaching can be. I grew up in creative writing circles that fostered my deep love for community and the writing process. Having the opportunity to share my passion for writing with students and help them grow as young writers remains the greatest honor of my life so far.My Writing Identity:
While I do love writing academic essays in my student life, poetry and storytelling are my writing "bread and butter". As soon as I was old enough to read and write, I was obsessed with storytelling. This obsession led me to UWM's College For Kids Writing Camp, where my fascination blossomed into a love for writing communities. To me, stories are the most powerful tool that everybody can access. This world is a better place when people are able to share their stories freely. While writing can be a personal and private outlet for me, I ultimately feed my passion through participating in writing as a part of a community. Writing is my lifeline and my greatest joy, so it only feels right to spend my life trying to foster that love for stories in others.

Hey Ivy! I really loved your collage! It pulled me a bit, as I have read all of Rupi Kaur's poetry books! I love a poetry book, not only because it is an easier read, but it also has so much to analyze which I find to be fascinating. It's also awesome that you got to experience a writing camp! That sounds like a dream!
ReplyDeleteHello Ivy-
ReplyDeleteYour collage is so well put together and shows so much personality through the arrangement. I also worked with UWM's College for Kids this past summer running Coding in Minecraft and Robotics sessions. It is such a great opportunity for the students who participate and a great way to get a taste of the classroom.
I find your relationship with writing inspiring. I have such a fear of writing creatively and I am always in such awe of those who are able to do it so fearlessly and flawlessly. I love the idea of writing as part of a community and would love to hear more about what that means to you.
Hi Ivy! Thank you for sharing your background as a writer and how you came to the role of writing coach throughout various points in your life. Your comfort in building your identity as a writer over time has certainly been an asset over your work as a writing coach and will continue to support you as a teacher! I would love to hear more about the community writing circles that you were lucky enough to be a part of growing up and how that shaped your sense of creating writing as a community and helped build your sense of the writing process.
ReplyDeleteIvy, it is inspiring to see the many different writing experiences you've had from a young child to now. Your pen and eye have been cultivated across many texts. I look forward to seeing how this plurality of composing practices play out in your multimodal composing play to come.
